Eastern Highland Healthy Cake House (Rocher Centre)

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Thanks to S, this year I managed to get to try this Chocolate- flavoured Vegetarian Christmas Log Cake. Beautiful, isn't it?

However, taste wise, I think I still prefer their Birthday cakes which in my opinion was much smoother, softer and creamy in taste (maybe also bec the Birthday cake was ordered and freshly baked while the Log cake was bought off -shelve and could be in their freezer for more days in comparison that caused the texture to harden:P)

But it was really a very beautiful cake so we have to thank all who managed to let vegetarians enjoy eggless cakes!!!

Also Big Thank you to all who had contributed to make vegetarian food more & more attractive and delicious in taste !!!

Rice House 粥大王

Last posting for Rice House was July08, how time flies.
This time I decided to reorder my once-favourite- their signature vegetarian duck rice.
In my fade memory, their yam rice used to taste better but the gravy for the mock duck (made from mushroom stalk) is still as good. And their belachan chilli is nice too.

I noticed that they seem to have increased their range of tibits to sell at their shop.:P

They are located at Blk 129 Geylang East ave 1, beside Foo Hai Chan Monastery & Opposite Sims Ville Condo. May alight at 2nd bus stop from Aljunied MRT & walk further up & turn left to Monastery direction. They are closed on Monday. Tel: 6747 3739

吾家有宝素食小站 VEGETORIUM

Their Mini-pot noodles, QQ noodles with sweet soup full of vegetarian mock ingredients and seaweed.
Laksa which my friend commented tasted better than Geylang's Kwan Inn Vegetarian Food.
Their vegetarian Prawn Dumpling soup noodles, noodles also QQ and their dumplings very nice! It even consisted of a mock sliced prawn in each dumpling & the mock meat ingredients was very replicate of the real version with black fungus added to its taste. I would like to try their fried prawn dumpling version next time. :-)

The shop (a bus-stop is in-front of it) is located along a stretch of shophouses (besides the pte apt: The Cassandra, Opposite Currency House) on 124 Pasir Panjang Road, S(118545).

一心素食, Chinatown

一心素食 really has a variety of soup noodles with similar soup base though.
I tried its LaMian this round.
The hand-made noodles texture was good & well-cooked.
I would strongly recommend Yi Xin to Vegetarians who like Soup noodles.:-)

Located at a coffeeshop at 39 Temple Street, 一心素食 is just near centre of street opp Lucky Chinatown, beside stretch where the new Grand court Vegetarian restaurant is. Opening hours: 8am to 10pm Daily.

素食林 Su Shi Lin

One of my favourite snacks: slim strips of potato chips. A new dish tried: Ngian Toufu with curry gravy. The Tou Pok is very crispy, and their curry is always nice:-)

Black bean sauced Hor Fun & Wanton Noodles.
The Hor Fun tasted average, maybe not saltish enough in my opinion. My friend tried the Wanton noodles and find it quite okay.

Cong Cong Vegetarian stall at Tiong Bahru Market

New Vegetarian Fried Hokkien Noodles in addition to their usual Fried Maggie Noodles was tempting enough to make me order it and Eyeing their equally tempting curry, I requested for more gravy to make it into semi-laksa or curry noodles. A wise choice indeed. They should have served this semi-laksa or curry noodles as one of their specialties.

Located at 2nd level food centre, Far left Corner from direction of escalator of Tiong Bahru Market (30 Seng Poh Road), about 2 bus-stop away from Tiong Bahru MRT. Bus: 5, 16, 33, 63, 195, 851

House of Tau Sar Piah

I think Balestier Road may be one place where there are many temples around and surrounded by eatery shops but you can hardly find any vegetarian stalls.
I walked up & down from stretch nearest to Thomson Medical centre to Shaw Plaza but could find no vegetarian stalls. I asked around and no one knows of any! So, this is really a potential place for vegetarian stall owners!!! I didn't have the time to locate Quality Hotel which is only place I know in that area that has a Vegetarian restaurant. In the end, I managed to special order Vegetarian Hor Fun from a non-vegetarian eatery outlet in Balestier Plaza. And look what a big portion of green vege I had and it's quite economical & tasty:-)

Balestier Road is famous for its many outlets of Tau Sar Piah (traditional bean paste pastry,豆沙饼). I think the House of Tau Sar Piah is the only Vegetarian outlet I can find along the stretch of Balestier Road that I explored. It is located at 529 Balestier Road, just beside the Kwang Im Tng Temple. I was surprised besides the traditional sweet & saltish type of pastry fillings, it has coffee, pine-apple and green-tea flavour as well.

Although not much a traditional pastry lover, I find the green-tea pastry that I tried quite acceptable. (Sorry, its surface may have suffered some casualty on my way home:P) Worth a try if you are vegetarian and love traditional pastry as the non vegetarian version generally has pork lard or onion oil as part of its ingredients. :{

And, do feedback to me if you know of any vegetarian eatery around Balestier Road as I may have to travel to there occasionally.

Thank you!!!

园香素食 Yuan Xiang Vegetarian

It's being long while that I visited the stall. Was my last feedback being tapped or just inflation? :P I think now their dishes started from $3.50. :P

I ordered their Lor Mee, its gravy came with sufficient vinegar, hence was quite appetising. The 2 big brown pieces were actually mock prawn coated with a layer of flour which tasted rather nice. Portion wise, just right this round. :-)

The stall is located at the food centre just opposite Bras Basah Complex.

莲芯茶坊, Lotus Heart Tea House

Yes, I couldn't resist the temptation to visit them to try their new menu:P

I discovered that their previous quarter's menu still remains but they added more dishes shown in their poster like the Lamian. Deciding that their Seafood Lamian may contain too much mock products as reflected from their poster, I ordered their "Eight Treasures Spicy Lamian" (sorry, cannot remember exact name:P) which had a good portion of beancurn cubes and mushrooms. (I think some unidentifiable slightly bigger pieces of bean curb-like ingredients maybe monkey-head mushrooms). The Lamian's noodles texture was relatively smooth and I liked its spicy sauce or gravy that had abit of Sichuan Spicy taste. Its roasted cashew nuts & peanuts added marks to it too. Mum liked their delicate yam pastry while I am not much a yam pastry lover myself :P.

With their new concept of having tables available at where it used to be an exhibition hall, ( now where the souvenir shop & library are) you could have an enjoyable meal there too. They have some nice souvenirs that you could consider as Christmas gift, e.g. their presentable recyclable bags, hp accessories etc.

The tea house's operating hours are daily from 9am to 7pm with last order at 6.30pm.
It is located at level 2 of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum which is located at Chinatown: 288 South Bridge Rd, off Sago street or opposite the famous Maxwell food centre, nearest MRT: Outram/Chinatown MRT.

Eight Immortals (Bishan Junction 8 Food Junction)

Dumpling Soup Noodles. Unlike what was served at Great World City's, the dumpling ingredients here really looked and tasted like pork from what I could recall its taste! If they add in some chopped water chestnut and parsley, I doubt meat-eaters will be able to differentiate. :P However, the soup for the day was abit salty though.:P

莲芯茶坊, Lotus Heart Tea House

The Tea House had changed its menu again, valid from 1Nov to 31 Dec 2008. As seen from attached poster picture taken, the new menu features Lamian, Eight Treasures Congee and Peanut Dumpling. I had not tried but the picture on Lamian with mushrooms on top looks appetising. Would love to visit it to try soon but thought of introducing it to you 1st...

Their new web link:

The tea house's operating hours are daily from 9am to 7pm with last order at 6.30pm.

It is located at level 2 of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum which is located at Chinatown: 288 South Bridge Rd, off Sago street or opposite the famous Maxwell food centre, nearest MRT: Outram/Chinatown MRT.

Ming Shan Vegetarian

Located at corner coffeeshop at HDB Block 7, Tanjong Pagar Road, this stall serves mixed rice as well as Lor Mee and Dry Noodles.

I think the standard of vegetarian dry noodles seems to have improved generally. The noodles was well-cooked and fried "vegetarian goose pieces" crispy. It is comforting to see queues for its economical mixed rice dishes which upon request will be served with a big free bowl of soup during lunch hours. A favourite for my non-vegetarian friend who introduced the stall to me. :-)

Lao Di Fang Vegetarian 老地方素食 (Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre)

The stall had moved! It is now located at #02-055. Thanks to a reader, xbb, abt the stall's move and aspired to find out the new location, I went on a brief hunt for it when I was around the area for dinner. It had moved to a secluded area of the hawker centre, understandably due to the great differences in rental (Phew, the difference in rent can be 3 times :P) due to difference in human traffic of location in 1 food centre.

Best way to locate it is to start from the centre escalator. On left of escalator, you could easily see "MingFa Fishball stall" move to its right corner and where you may think that it is the end, you will see a poster on the wall that guides you to stalls 051-098, just dare dare walk towards direction where you thought could be leading to end, you will see another lane of stalls hidden from the human traffic. Happy exploring!!!

Craving for rice instead of the usual noodles, I decided to try their curry chicken rice set. It was served with mixed brown & white rice. The fried mock chicken tasted normal but I love the curry, abit towards Indian curry flavour, should have asked for more to go with the rice. Soup for the day I recall was white carrot and winter melon that melted in your mouth. Simple but nice.

Cong Cong Vegetarian stall at Tiong Bahru Market

Finally had a chance to try its Hor Fun that I long heard about. Was told the chef managed to complete his cooking of Mixed-Rice dishes early, hence could start his "Zhi-Char" early for the day. I could see quite a number of patrons trying the Hor Fun and it do looked good so I too packed home for my lunch.
It is the traditional Cantonese type of Hor Fun. Taste reasonable with generous portion of mushrooms and vegetables and even 2 slices of vegetarian ham. Quite a good portion at $3.

Located at 2nd level food centre, Far left Corner from direction of escalator of Tiong Bahru Market (30 Seng Poh Road), about 2 bus-stop away from Tiong Bahru MRT. Bus: 5, 16, 33, 63, 195, 851

Yuan Wei Quan Vegetarian (YWQ)

Long time since I last visited the stall and a surprise on new addition to their Menu of the day: Mee Siam. :-)

No lime slices provided but the gravy was already spicy & sour enough. It was accompanied with cubes of fried beancurd, taupok and mock goose pieces and they were all so crispy!!! Strongly recommended to try!!!

The food court is located at B1 of HDB Hub. You can either enter thru basement car park entrance or from entrance besides McDonald from Bus interchange.
The stall is located at far right end if from entrance besides McDonald.

Nature Vegetarian (Sin Ming Ave)

Its Mee Hoon Goreng turned out to be better than expected. With the lime juice squeezed, the spicy & sour taste is a good mix with the sweet chilli sauce provided.

Above is Cutlet Dry noodles from their Ngian Toufu stall, the Mee Pok was quite well cooked and though presentation on the cutlet did not look good, the coat of flour was well-done with those saltish ("Yan-Su") seasoning. It actually revives my memory of those Taiwanese style of chicken cutlets.

The coffee shop is located at 409 Sin Ming Ave, #02-01 (Opp Bright Hill temple)
Opening hrs: 7am to 9.30pm

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Eight Immortals (Bishan Junction 8 Food Junction)

Herbal Mutton Soup Noodles. With generous portion of mock mutton, fish and prawn slices and vegetables, this promotional item on menu at $3.80 is quite value for money. I like its soup which you can see and taste a fair amount of herbal ingredients. :-)

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Soon Lee Vegetarian (Near Red Hill MRT Hawker Centre)

I couldn't resist the temptation to order its dry Ngian Toufu when I saw many patrons ordering it. Indeed, its sauce tasted excellent and very appetising. The owner was very generous with the kangkong vege, unlike some stalls. I regretted not asking for a larger bowl of the tasty and sweet soup.:P

Located beside the market near RedHill MRT, it is the central corner stall at 1st stretch opposite the HDB shops.

Kwan Inn Vegetarian Food 观音斋

Mushroom Dry Noodles at 观音斋. The fried beancurb skin mock fish slices, mushroom and vegetables are not the selling point but the well-cooked noodles themselves are, they are very "Q"!

It is located at corner coffee shop at Blk134 Geylang East Ave1, 2nd bus stop from Aljunied Mrt. Opposite Tan Swie Hian Museum.

Ying Xin Healthy Vegetarian

This new stall at the Chinatown Complex Hawker centre,
#02-005, had located its attractive banner at a very strategic location (near the escalator leading to the many vegetarian stalls such as LaoDiFang) though the stall itself is located at the other far end of the food centre. I managed to locate it only after much meandering search and it is diagonally opposite where the "Er Gu" dessert stall is.

From the menu, one can see that it is going along the healthy vegetarian concept. I ordered its Vegetarian Fish Mee Hoon Soup and its clear soup really has the fishy taste due to the generous portion of seaweed being added. It's good to know another vegetarian stall, another choice for vegetarian consumers. The stall also serves vegetarian dessert. :-)

Nice Goreng Pisang & Snacks (Vegetarian)

This is a newer stall just behind the escalator of the center food court at Basement 1 of People's Park Centre (Opp Chinatown Point), a stall away from earlier introduced Mushroom Dry Noodles vegetarian stall.

As its name, it sells a variety of fried snacks like Goreng Pisang, Fried sweet potato, Yam and Carrot cakes and Curry puffs etc. As they keep their snacks in a warmer as can be seen in picture, the snacks are still warm when you buy them. I tried their Popiah and Samosa, the skin is very crispy, a good try! They also have a specialty that combines 3 types of ingredients: yam, sweet potato and rice cake. Can give it a try when you visit the area...

Cheers:-)

Ci Neng Vegn Food at People's Park Centre B1 Center Food Court

Located at the center Food Court at Basement 1 of People's Park Centre (Opp Chinatown Point), amidst the many tour agencies, I noticed this stall is quite popular with its wide variety of dishes on its menu and its daily special.

I ordered its Mushroom Dry Noodles which came out as more like "Char Siew Noodles" with Mushrooms. The mushrooms and mock barbecue meat tasted average but I liked its pieces of "fried goose", very crispy and its noodles well-done. Not easy to find well-cooked dry noodles, so this noodles could worth a try if you miss the "wanton noodles" type of noodles. :-)

Eight Immortals (Kopitiam at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre)

I had originally intended to visit 吾家有宝素食小站 VEGETORIUM along Pasir Panjang Road but it was closed for the day. I was kindly advised that the next closest vegetarian eatery is 4 bus-stops away from there, at the food centre near Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre.
Since I had some time to spare before my next appointment, I decided to venture there to explore new outlets.
It is there, at a corner of the food centre that I found Eight Immortals.
I decided to try their Hor Fun. It is a good choice made. :-)
It came out as traditional Cantonese style of Hor Fun with a generous portion of veges and gravy. The Hor Fun was well-fried and fragrant that stimulated me to finish the whole plate despite being without much appetite just minutes ago in the unbearable hot weather that Spore was experiencing for the day!

And guess what! I found a couple of vegetarian supplies (wholesale and retail) outlets just opposite the stall. :-)
Among them is Friendly Vegetarian that Crystal had previously recommended. And I managed to find out that they will provide delivery for on-line purchases above $80. If I am heading home, I would have bought those frozen snacks that she had earlier recommended. :P

The stall is located at a corner of the food centre facing the car-park.
The food centre is beside the West Coast Car Mart and Wholesale centre.
Opening hours: 6.30am to 3pm

Yes Natural F&B (悦意坊)

It is a rejoice to know another outlet of Yes Natural opening opposite Tiong Bahru Market. This branch at Tiong Bahru operates more like a vegetarian supermarket though the front portion of the shop carries some bread and cakes (no birthday cakes as yet but was told you could order via them). We were also told that they are considering bringing some cooked food products as well in near future which I certainly look forward to. I certainly enjoyed their baked cheese noodles. :-)

We bought their walnut cake and my non-vege family members actually praised its smoothness and softness despite without egg ingredients. What a relief... This is 2nd eggless vegetarian bakery that they managed to accept. (My favourite is Eastern Highland at Rocher Centre)

This shop is located at 58, Seng Poh Rd #01-27, opposite Tiong Bahru Market, along same stretch as 7-11. Tel: 6227 3280.

Opening hours: Mon: 9am-4pm; Tue-Sun: 7.30am-7.30pm

健康斋素食 Vegetarian Food, Hong Lim Complex Food centre

I couldn't help resist recommending their economical congee style brown rice porridge again. Though ingredients seem to have reduced from my faded memory and price increased, it still taste as good!!! The stall also serves mixed rice dishes and it is heartening to see long queues for it amongst the many famous non-vegetarian stalls at the food centre on Non new/full moon vegetarian days.

Thanks to a reader who inform me that the stall is now relocated to #01-49 (facing the market) of Hong Lim Complex Food centre after renovation. It is closed on Sundays.

Nature Vegetarian (Sin Ming Ave)

Does this look good? Its presentation is more towards the traditional dark-sauced carrot cakes that we expected. For some who like it to be slightly burnt, I guess you can request.... The carrot cake is much softer though not as springy as 一心's. But the chilli is great and added points to the dish.:-)
However, the stall serves dishes with eggs as well so if you don't take eggs, you must inform in advance. The dish I ordered above is without eggs and it proved that vegetarian carrot cakes can be as tasty and fragrant as well.

The coffee shop is located at 409 Sin Ming Ave, #02-01 (Opp Bright Hill temple) Opening hrs: 7am to 9.30pm

一心素食, Chinatown

At the request of a friend looking for nice vegetarian fried carrot cake, I was quite lucky to come across 2 stalls to recommend to her.

One is at 一心. Although it may not look dark and sweet enough as per what we usually defined as nice for fried black-sauced carrot cake, it turned out to be sweet as well for the white pieces and the carrot cake is springy!!! I would think the standard is better than alot of non-vegetarian version! :-)

Located at a coffeeshop at 39 Temple Street, 一心素食 is just near centre of street opp Lucky Chinatown, beside stretch where the new Grand court Vegetarian restaurant is. Opening hours: 8am to 10pm Daily.

一心素食, Chinatown

More noodles! The Spinach noodles is soft and smooth. I like their soup and ingredients, lots of beancurb skin and vege! The mock "ikan bilis" is nice too.
How I miss good Ban Mian! The Texture of Ban Mian is perfect, not too thick. I would think the thinner version of ikan bilis used for the spinach noodles may be more suitable for the Ban Mian and a pity they don't have those special chilli for Ban Mian which would certainly add points to it. Anyway, Cheers for another good noodles choice available! :-)

Located at a coffeeshop at 39 Temple Street, 一心素食 is just near centre of street opp Lucky Chinatown, beside stretch where the new Grand court Vegetarian restaurant is. Opening hours: 8am to 10pm Daily.

Lao Di Fang Vegetarian 老地方素食 (Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre)

I do like their Fried Hong Kong Noodles, simple with plenty of shredded cabbage, mushrooms, bean sprouts, vegetarian ham. A very big plate with a light taste that goes well with its belachan type of chilli. :-)

The stall had moved to #02-055. It had moved to a secluded area of the hawker centre.

一心素食, Chinatown

Noticed a new noodles on their menu: Fiery Spicy(Hot) Noodles. It is basically yellow noodles in chilli soup and really fantastic on a cool, rainy day. The chilli soup is really really spicy. Ingredients included fried mock salted fish/seaweed with mock meat balls, tomatoes and vegetables. Make sure you have tissue paper with you to wipe your nose and sweat if you order this dish:-)

Located at a coffeeshop at 39 Temple Street, 一心素食 is behind 德宝点心, De Bao Dian Xin.

World Food Fair 2008 - Loving Hut

The World Food fair is currently held at Suntec City Convention centre Exhibition hall 601 & 602 from 3 Sep to 7 Sep. Look what I had found!!!

A stall by VSS! at the left corner of the hall.

Yummy, vegetarian satays, vietnamese vege rolls, curry with bread and rainbow rolls.

I tried their satay, nice! The vietnamese vege roll has the unique peppermint leave & thick mee hoon with vege, very refreshing. You must go there to support them, ok?

Pine Tree (Food Junction at Bugis)

Guess what is the brown item on the plate? No, it is not fried squid (though it looked like in picture:P). It is actually vegetarian fried drumstick. Freshly out from the kitchen, I couldn't resist adding it to my Sambal Fried Rice with Petai!Being just out from kitchen, it is crispy with well-fried coat of flour and the best part is its interior contains my favourite beancurb skin. Its "bone" support is actually sugarcane and not ice-cream stick, so at $1 per piece, I think it is worth trying. The brown stuff on it tasted like mashed ginger, very unique. I found out that they have quite nice mixed-rice dishes and that included fried cereal prawns that looked yummy!
Ok, back to the sambal fried rice with petai...
Well, you can taste sambal in the rice. Though not spicy, I like the taste of its soft rice. I wish they had marinated the petai with sambal chilli more, I can still feel the aftertaste after a day:P. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the meal:-) though it will be ages before I will dare taste petai again... Now I understand why Crystal mentioned that it needs strong accompaniments to mask its taste.

The Food court is located at 3rd level of Bugis Junction, and the stall is just beside the centre escalator.

慈缘轩 (Ci Yan Xuan) Chinatown

This is the 1st time I tried their "Triple Mushroom Noodle Broth". Their mushrooms comprise of the single black dried mushroom :-( , slices of button mushrooms and fried slices of abalone mushrooms (the top left brown slices as shown in picture).

The fried abalone mushroom slices are quite unique in taste. They would have tasted more crispy if not turned abit soggy after in contact with the broth. The noodles and broth are tasty (abit like Ipoh Hor Fun gravy) but the portion of the noodles served is small in comparison to their other dishes and this is the 1st time I still feel hungry after finishing their food.:P
Address: 8 Smith Street (shophouse near end of Food Street)
Tel: 6225 9026 (If you want to confirm menu of the day after 11am:P)
Usual Opening Hours: 12pm-10.30pm

Pine Tree (Food Junction at Bugis)

I went back for their 书香面汤 (Fragrant Book Soup Noodles) and asked for their Mee Hoon version. I think it went well with the soup which I grew to love. I couldn't stop finishing the soup, naturally sweetened with generous portion of red & white carrots.
My friend tried their curry fish set and although not spicy, it is quite nice with an Indian curry taste and Best of all, the mock fish is made of my favourite beancurb skin roll.;-)

The Food court is located at 3rd level of Bugis Junction, and the stall is just beside the centre escalator.

吾家有宝素食小站 VEGETORIUM

It is great to discover another new vegetarian outlet and one with menu that serves a variety. :-)

From noodles to rice and home-made Vegetarian Pizzas!!! We ordered their thin crust mushroom pizza and it smells & tastes good. :-)

They also have nice vegetarian sardine curry puff (Strongly recommend!!!).
And... hmm...they also have catering services :-)

They are located along a stretch of shophouses (Beside the pte apt: The Cassandra, Opposite Currency House) on 124 Pasir Panjang Road, S(118545).
Operating hours: Mon to Fri 8.30am to 5.30pm.
Tel: 64747 203

Not sure if it helps, but it is 1 bus-stop before the one for PES from VivoCity direction (then cross the traffic light) or 1 bus-stop after to VivoCity direction.
