Rice House 粥大王

Although its name is 粥大王 Porridge King, directly translated from Mandarin, it has many other specialties of the house and I would strongly recommend their mock duck rice & saltish vege duck soup (really taste very much like the real version:P) & their house noodles (those who like sesame oil would love it).
However, I miss Congee so I decided to try their signature mock minced meat porridge instead of the above recommendations today.
It tastes like well-flavored sesame oil pumpkin porridge, with some chopped parsley leaves, some mock minced meat, pumpkin cubes, & grains of braised peanuts. It is tasty & you could finish mouthfuls in no time, wish they could serve bigger portion with more ingredients:P
They are located at Blk 129 Geylang East ave 1, beside Foo Hai Chan Monastery & Opposite Sims Ville Condo. May alight at 2nd bus stop from Aljunied MRT & walk further up & turn left to Monastery direction.
They are closed on Monday. Tel: 6747 3739

Kwan Inn Vegetarian Food 观音斋

This is one of the earlier pioneer, more well-known vegetarian stall (also a stall that you can always find participating in Vegn Food Fair) which sells a variety of dishes including Mixed rice, Ban Mee, Ngian toufu, Mushroom noodles, Laksa, Hor Fun, Pastries etc.
I decided to try its traditional coconut milk laksa. At $2, there is a generous portion of meehoon/noodles as well as toupok (beancurb used in laksa) & bean sprouts. The gravy is of strong coconut milk taste & is a favourite order of the patrons. It is not spicy unless you add its chilli so suitable for those who cannot take hot stuff as well.
It is located at corner coffee shop at Blk134 Geylang East Ave1, 2nd bus stop from Aljunied Mrt. Opposite Tan Swie Hian Museum.

Food #03

My friend read about Food #03 , being a vegn place run by a group of artists & being curious about it, we decided to visit it.

Post Museum (next to the cafe), where they hold art exhibits.
Pumpkin Soup with freshly baked bread - we enjoy the soup and the bread is fresh n crispy (wonder if it is the right word to describe crispy for bread? But it is really nice :-))
Creamy Mushroom with Linguine - We love the salad & the well marinated mushrooms but the pasta is abit too dry, it could be improved with more sauce. :P
Asparagus, Oyster Mushroom & Olives Pizza - ave but was surprised to find onion in it as it was not mentioned in menu:-(

Advices when you are there:

Do confirm or request that the food you intend to order does not contain egg, onion & garlic if you are full vegn or vegan.

Try not to go there with an empty stomach as we waited quite a while before the food was being served.:P

They are located at 109 Rowell Road (@ the Jalan Besar End - road faces Jalan Besar Food Center)

Opening hours: 5 pm to 10 pm (Closed on Monday)

Fri: 3 pm to 11.30 pm, Sat & Sun: 12 pm-11 pm

Cong Cong Vegetarian stall at Tiong Bahru Market

With increasing prices everywhere, it is good to know that this vegetarian stall maintains its prices at $2 with order of of rice, meehoon or noodles with any 3 dishes.
Among its dishes, I like its brinjal, very soft & mild spicy. I also like its fried "goose" (斋鹅) pieces, very crispy. I always wonder why 斋鹅 is called 斋鹅
as it doesn't look any closer like goose to me. Any one knows the answer?:P
Located at 2nd level food centre, at far left corner from direction of escalator of Tiong Bahru Market (30 Seng Poh Road), about 2 bus-stop away from Tiong Bahru MRT. Bus: 5, 16, 33, 63, 195, 851

八仙素食 (Koufu - Toa Payoh central)

Special of the day: Nasi Bryani (Yellow Ginger Rice).
The curry mutton & its gravy (nice) helps me to finish the big portion of rice.:-)
But they used normal wonton skin instead of the Indian type of flour crackers.
Would prefer the latter though.:P
The stall also sells stir-fry dishes like Mee Goreng as well as Mixed Rice dishes and Ngian Toufu.

The foodcourt is located above NTUC opposite OCBC bank at 2nd level.

Classic Lao Di Fang Vegetarian Restaurant PL

This is my favourite Fried Beancurb (脆皮豆腐). Very nice when taken hot, although it looks like you can swallow a piece in 1 mouthful, pls don't try to do that as the interior is steaming hot. It will hurt your tongue. I wish they could spare more of the special soya sauce which they had cut a small hole at the centre of the beancurb so that the interior could absorb & taste even better.

My favourite Spicy Noodles (麻辣锅烧面). With generous portion of vege, white & red carrots, corn & I must mention their mock meat. Although I generally don't like mock meat (which they call it mock beef here), they had marinated it so well that it tasted excellent. I tried cooking before using the instant frozen product but somehow it taste different:P. And the noodles are nice - soft white fat noodles that goes well with its spicy soup. :-)
Peking Duck (北京烤鸭) A new try today & it turns out to be better than my expectation. The sauce brings out the flavour of the dish but they should provide more of the cucumber & carrot slices as they are not enough for the wraps.
HK Fried Noodles (港式炒面). Was expecting maggie mee type of noodles but it turn out to be my favourite Ee-Fu Noodles (伊付面). Taste wise not fantastic but ok lah.
Others to recommend are their sweet & sour duck pieces (酸甜鸭件) & Dim Sum carrot cakes :-) Yummy.:-)

Was told They are fr MOVING to Hotel Royal @ Queens, 12 Queen Street, #02-03 (near Spore Arts Museum) by end Jun09 to new shop at 9 Penang Rd, #B1-12 Park Mall on 19Jul09.

Fr Aug09, they again moved to 9 Penang Rd, Park Mall, Basement 1, #B1-12, just turn left from the down escalator. :-)-

Ice Monster 冰馆

Ice with Mango & Strawberry Sherbet
After a tiring walk exploring Little India & feeling thirsty, we decided to take a break at this Ice dessert shop at "The Bencoolen".
With generous portion of sweet mango piling on top of the ice, we have no regrets ordering it. But we could do without the strawberry sherbet though as it taste abit weird (like not fresh oil taste:P)
What a delicacy on a warm day. :-) They have many other combinations and guess what???
I saw a Vegetarian label on its door. Cheers!!!:-)

Pine Tree (Food Junction at Bugis)

Their Stir-fry Ramen, certainly tasted better than their soup ramen as it is not soggy:P. I noticed that they like to use raw cucumber slices as a garnish or side dish in their stir-fry dishes. Accompanied by the chilli, it is worth trying.

香香小吃 Vegetarian Pureland

I have always heard from my friend that there is this 3 vegetarian shops beside the ABC market (near Ikea & Safra). I finally managed to find my way there 1 good afternoon.
The centre shop with its unique signboard picture of a happy Panda chewing bamboo caught my attention. It is a small shop selling not only vegetarian food but also organic vegetables, nature health products and other vegetarian products. I could find the Rock salt that I introduced in my other blog there:-)
Nowadays, it's hard to find Soon Kueh with just nice texture of skin and I found it there. The skin is not too thick, though slightly thinner would be even more perfect but nice enough and the ingredients of turnip is fresh & crunchy.
I guess I would visit it again to try its other food such as sushi & noodles on its menu.
Located at Blk 11 Jalan Bt Merah, #03-4460 (If from Ikea & Safra, turn left & 1 block away from ABC market towards Bt Merah Central direction, or 3 bus-stops away from Bt Merah Inter-change)
Though unit is #03, but it is actually at level 1 to normal eye level & you find 3 impressive looking vegetarian shops side by side.
香香小吃 is closed on Sundays.

欢心素 (Huan Xin Su) at Rocher Centre Coffee Shop

Their Menu of the Day: Handmade Flour pieces (面粉果)
which you can always find selling at those foodcourt handmade noodles stalls with the other popular handmade noodles, Ban Mian (板面).
The way of cooking here is slightly different, instead of simply boiling, I think the chef stir-fry it with soup. The flour pieces are also unique in shape with some waves (see the white pieces which look like fish slices, unlike the normal plain flat pieces at food-court stalls).
Taste is also different, more like those Shanghai rice cakes (上海年糕) or 刀削面.
Overall, quite nice.:-) Can try:-)

Address: 欢心素 (Huan Xin Su)Blk 1, Rocher Rd, #01-506
(Rocher centre corner coffeeshop, 2 doors away from the vegetarian cake house, opp Bugis OG, near the famous Simaru Guan Yin Temple)

Green Vegetarian Kitchen (Koufu, Commonwealth MRT)

Another visit to the stall, this time I decided to try its fish soup meehoon.
A big bowl of light soup (taste like with milk but very mild, maybe soya milk?) with fresh vege, seaweed and thin slices of mock fried fish (not bean curb skin type:P). I like its thick meehoon, very smooth & soft. It would be nice to have it with laksa :P

This stall is located near side entrance of Koufu Foodcourt beside Commonwealth MRT.
